Thu Oct 28, 2004 07:19 AM ET
LONDON, Oct 28 (Reuters) - A $5.5 billion takeover bid for Australian miner WMC Resources Ltd. (WMR.AX: Quote, Profile, Research) by Swiss-based Xstrata (XTA.L: Quote, Profile, Research) would create the eighth largest minerals producer in the world in terms of value of production, if completed, according to Swedish consultancy Raw Materials Group.
Xstrata is the 20th largest minerals company, producing 0.947 percent of the world's minerals in 2003 by value. WMC was ranked 21 with 0.928 percent.
The take-over would create a company with a market capitalisation of $15.88 billion, making it the fifth largest by that measure.
According to data from Reuters Metals Production Database (MPD) the merged entity would produce nearly 680,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate and 423,000 tonnes of copper cathode based on 2003 production.
The company would produce 6.16 percent of the world's refined zinc and nearly five percent of the world's nickel.
The tables below detail capacity and production based on the companies' equity stakes in production facilities.
